Designing ownable brand components for The Times website and apps

I help to communicate a brand’s true voice by focusing on what they do
and why they matter. I acheive this by creating emotionally engaging
design work that connects with an audience.

Project info

My role was to redesign The Times’ existing family of digital components to be used across their new responsive news website, tablet and mobile apps.

I adopted a two-pronged approach- designing an easy-to-use template that would allow the editing team to upload frequently and without complication, whilst also ensuring that the end product was consistent and familiar to the user.

Style guide creation

After initial interviews with the marketing and editing team and auditing the site, we needed to standardise the components and decide what content type would suit each component.

The structure of each component needed to follow a format which would guide the editing team when populating each template with content. It also needed to inform the user of it's purpose and relevance.

The importance of content denoted the size chosen by editing team. Is it a key component that feel the user should engage with, or is it related content that could feature to the side of an article?

Some components needed variations of the same content. Many factors needed to be considered such as screen height, whether the component should be collapsable, do we use imagery to add context, what is the character limit and how can we ensure the team doesn't not exceed the limit.
